Facts and Figures - Kodumela, South Africa

The translation of Kodumela is dig deep or work hard. It was so named by the committee that oversees the programme.

You will not find Kodumela on a map - it is the name of the programme not a place name. Tzaneen is the nearest town.

Note - ADP = Area Development Programme

  • Kodumela is funded by World Vision working with the ADP manager and community through the ADP committee which meets monthly.

  • The programme cares for 3000 vulnerable children and orphans.

  • The programme area has a population of 65,000 in 6 villages.

  • Programme activities include:

    • Home Base Care - 26 care givers take care of 820 sick people

    • Drop-in Centres (orphan feeding stations) - established in each village and feeding 174 orphans twice a day

    • Lay Councillor Programme - 24 lay councillors dealing with HIV/AIDS among other things. People testing has increased from 20 to 100 per month. 100 food parcels are distributed to destitute families every month and orphans are helped to apply for foster grants.

    • Orphans - the ADP has houses for 2 child-headed households. They are helped to establish small businesses to generate their own income; for example they are provided with chickens so they can sell the eggs (mostly to the Drop-in Centres) or goats to establish a milk business.

    • Education - the ADP helped to establish the link with Cholsey school in Oxfordshire, it has built 2 schools and 3 creches, supplied equipment including chairs, tables and carpets to schools. An electricity supply has been installed in one high school. 3 blocks of toilets have been built at 3 schools and 3 creches (parents supplied the materials and the ADP paid the builder)

  • Agriculture - the ADP has established 6 communal gardens each with 5 members. The produce they grow is sold locally and at markets in Pretoria.

  • Economic Development - the ADP has been instrumental with the following:

    • a group of 7 women received training in sewing skills, marketing and financial management

    • 2 beadwork groups have been established. One is now financially independent and profitable. The women also bake and sell scones twice a day and they have set up an orphan feeding station next to their workshop

    • the ADP committee itself has received training in financial management and marketing

  • Sponsorship - sponsored children receive direct benefits once a year (eg blankets, school shoes, school bags, plates, mattresses etc). Sponsors can contact World Vision to discuss donating money or goods to specific families or organisations such as schools. For example, one generous sponsor helped the ADP establish a computer centre in a primary school by providing 5 computers and printers. Many children between the ages of 6 and 13 benefit from this donation.

  • Christian impact - World Vision is a christian organisation. The ADP has established a Pastor's Forum which operates in 10 villages and is made from 19 churches.
